How it works

  1. 1

    Upload

Drop a PDF or tap to browse. We check it is a real PDF before any processing starts.

  2. 2

    Compress

Ghostscript walks quality presets, then image DPI, until the file is at or under your target.

  3. 3

    Download

Grab a time-limited link. The copy on our disk is scheduled for deletion within an hour.

Why compress a PDF to exactly 1 MB?

A 1 MB cap is the default on many email-to-form workflows, some counselling document lockers, and departmental inboxes that still reject anything over 1024 KB. Phone scanner apps happily emit 8–15 MB files for a few pages of A4. Those files are not “high quality” in a useful way — they are uncompressed JPEGs wrapped in a PDF.

Targeting 1 MB lets us stay on milder Ghostscript /ebook settings for most text-plus-scan bundles, which keeps diagrams and passport photos cleaner than a 100 KB pass. If the portal allows 2 MB, use that page instead. If it allows 1 MB only, do not stop at a generic “compressed” 1.4 MB export; the extra 400 KB is exactly what fails the upload.

For thesis chapters or publisher proofs, 1 MB may require dropping image DPI. Check figures with small type. For job applications, 1 MB is usually generous — prefer this size when the notice says 1 MB / 1024 KB so you are not over-compressing.

What you get

Exact size targeting

Pick 50 KB, 100 KB, 200 KB, 500 KB, 1 MB, or a custom cap. The compressor aims for that ceiling, not a vague “smaller file”.

Text stays readable

We downsample images before touching text. Form fields, Hindi/English body copy, and signatures stay sharp enough for exam portals.

Auto-delete in 1 hour

Uploads live outside the web root and are deleted by a scheduled job after 60 minutes. We do not keep copies for training or ads.

Works on any device

No install, no email gate. Compress from a phone while filling SSC, UPSC, railway, banking, or NEET forms.

Batch-ready pipeline

The MVP processes one file at a time. The same job path is ready to drop onto a database-backed queue when traffic needs it.

No watermark

The downloaded PDF is yours. We do not stamp pages or wrap the file in a branded cover.

Frequently asked questions

How do I compress a PDF to exactly 1 MB?

Choose the 1 MB preset (or open the dedicated 1 MB page), upload your PDF, and download the result. CompressPdfs Online runs Ghostscript quality presets and, if needed, stepwise image downsampling until the file is at or under 1 MB. If the PDF is already smaller than 1 MB, you get the original back unchanged.

Will compressing reduce PDF quality?

Compressing a PDF can reduce image sharpness, but text-heavy forms usually stay fully readable. CompressPdfs Online lowers embedded image DPI only as far as needed to hit your target, and it will not silently destroy a file: if the size still cannot be met, you get the smallest safe result plus a clear message.

Is it safe to upload my PDF here?

Uploads are stored outside the public web root, addressed by unguessable names, and deleted automatically after one hour. We do not use your documents for advertising, training, or sharing, and download links expire so a leaked URL stops working.

Is 1 MB 1024 KB or 1000 KB?

This tool treats 1 MB as 1,048,576 bytes (1024 × 1024). That is the convention most Windows properties dialogs and many PHP upload limits use. If a notice writes “1000 KB”, use Custom and enter 1000 KB.

Can I email the compressed PDF after download?

Yes. A 1 MB PDF is small enough for typical Gmail and departmental SMTP limits. We still recommend sending it as an attachment you have opened once, rather than forwarding a file you have not visually checked.

Does 1 MB compression keep OCR text?

If the source PDF already contains a text layer, Ghostscript generally keeps it. If your “PDF” is only photos with no OCR, compression will not add selectable text. Run OCR in a scanner app first if the portal requires searchable PDFs.

What is the maximum I can upload?

50 MB by default. The output is targeted at 1 MB regardless of how large the source is, subject to a quality floor so pages remain usable.
